Second Jam Experience

First of all, it happened the most important thing. And that is I failed to submit my jam submission on time.  It would sound weird to people like how is it important. Well its important because it made me realize how important is time management. And people say that last jam day should be for finalizing which now seems true enough. And you cant rush your submission process till the end. You should at least have 2-3 hours when starting to submit your project which I failed miserably when I was submitting.

And the funny thing is I started to think about submission nearly half an hour before the submission process ends. At that time I was building my WebGL build this time (so as more people would comfortably be able to play my game this time). I took time quite a lot of time which made me think I lost. And I did but I also won because I did finished my second jam game. Why does it matter if you weren't able to submit it? You did finished another game which you should be proud of. I mean I did felt pathetic about myself to have made such a simple and silly mistake. But when I saw the discord community, I realized it was not just me who did that mistake. Even certain jam teams failed to submit it. One discord server admin said "What if you couldn't submit it on time you still made a game and learned something from it so be proud of it. In next jam manage you time better and overcome it.". I thought to myself he is right. I should be happy and learn time management better.

Learnings

  • Time management is important and should not be neglected.
  • I did implemented few more generalized scripts from scratch such as dialogueSystem, soundManager, introManager etc which I can reuse in my next game wherever required with few tweaks.
  • Prior to this jam I did learned shader graphs from which I used my custom pixelate shader to normalize my pixel graphics wherever I thought the details look more exaggerated and out of place.
  • I have improved scene transitions this time although a lot better could be done so yeah minor improvement you could say.
  • Most importantly this time I did game art, the main character and some in-game assets were made by me. I did focussed a bit on visuals this time.
  • Also I did the original story design and written dialogues myself this time which was new for me and fun.

Overall, I learned some things in the end which matters. I did felt disheartened when my submission didn't go well but later I also felt proud for making a game worth mentioning. It could be shitty for people but yeah I made it which I should be able to say proudly.
